About Me

Hi there!

My name is Birgit Pauli-Haack and “I code for a purpose”.

Update October 2024

2023 what a life changing year in more than one way:

  • My father passed, 95 years old,
  • I went to the first WordCamp Asia in Bangkok,
  • We moved from Sarasota, FL to Munich, Germany
  • I went to WordCamp Europe in Athens
  • My mother hat a terrible accident and after five months in and out of hospitals and rehab, she moved into a nursing home in January not far from where I live.
  • My father-in-law died, 86 years old, after a month in the hospital.

Automattic is a company that supports you when you deal with bereavement, and other family care issues by giving you enough time off to deal with life things and the grief.

In 2024, we started recovering and catching up, another WordCamp Asia, another WordCamp Europe, and a ton of awesome work with Automattic.

We love our apartment in the heart of Munich near one of the biggest public parks in the World across the street from an contemporary art museum, and surrounded by excellent Bavarian, Italian and Southeast Asian restaurants.

Update October 2022

In August 2021, I joined Automattic as a WordPress developer advocate full-time. Among other things, I continue to publish on Gutenberg Times, co-host the podcast Gutenberg Changelog and facilitate Discussions on the Gutenberg Times YouTube Channel, now my time working on those projects is sponsored by Automattic. I worked on WordPress Major releases as part of the release squad responsible for documentation for WordPress 6.0 and 6.1.

The Developer Advocate team at Automattic has five more members: Ryan Welcher, Justin Tadlock, Nick Diego and JuanMa Garrido. – Five people from four Nations and four timezones.

At my company, Pauli Systems, we have been phasing out our client work to existing team members or agency friends in the WordPress community. After 20 years, I closed the company as per December 31, 2022

2021 has been a life-changing year, also in a different area. After 23 years building a life in Naples, we moved to Sarasota, FL in April 2021. We renovated our Naples house and sold it in June 2021.

With that change, I also stepped down from local community organizing (Tech4Good, NPTechProjects and WordPress Meetup) and pro bono work with local nonprofits.

I traded all that in for high-impact work in the WordPress Community to come.

Well, I guess I wasn’t doing well, keeping track of those things. It was a touch year, though.

October 2020

My company, Pauli Systems works mostly with nonprofits and associations and helps them to connect with their supporters, donors, members online. We create the technology foundation on which organizations can build.

I am also a Core Contributor to WordPress and work on other teams.

I used the Covid-19 #stay-at-home time to build a team of writers working on the End User Documentation for Gutenberg. It is an ongoing challenge to manage a team of distributed, all-time-zone volunteers.

It’s a great joy to work with all of them, and we make some headway bringing the official documentation of the block editor to the newest version of WordPress.

On WordPress make blog handbook, I edit the “Keeping up with Gutenberg – Index” page.

I also publish the Gutenberg Times.com with its YouTube Channel and the Gutenberg Changelog Podcast

Here is a bio in Polish: Thank you to Maciek Palmowski for having me as a guest editor on WPOwl newsletter!
